Astrophotography at Atiamuri

10/05/2023

On a cold night in April I went out to capture a bit of Astrophotography. First time in ages that there was no clouds or moon to ruin things. It was the coldest night of the year so far and the car reckoned it was 1 deg C at times, but it was well worth it.

As the fog rolled in from the nearby Waikato River, I captured the centre of the Milky Way near Atiamuri in the Central North Island, New Zealand. The hill in the picture is Pohaturoa and stands some 265m above the river.

The heart of the Milky Way, captured near Atiamuri in NZ.
I went to get some gas later on and the car was showing 2 deg C. Brrr!
A couple of nights later I went out again. Same road but this time very near to Whakamaru Dam.
This is the same scene by day – quite a lovely place (a cycle path on the Waikato River Trails).
To the left view of where I was standing was this rather cool ‘wiggy’ road. I was hoping to capture it with the Milky Way overhead, or with rail tail-lights going down it. Neither of which happened; Galaxy too far to the right and no vehicle traffic.

p.s. how many cameras are in this shot? Hint: more than one…
